I am excited to announce that the Canadian Anti-Hate Network (CAHN) has issued their revised version of 40 Ways to Fight the Far-Right: Tactics for Community Activists in Canada. I helped work on the guide, which is based on my US-focused 40 Ways to Fight Fascists.
There are translations of the original guide in German and Spanish, but this is the first one changed to fit country-specific circumstances. If you’d like to make one to fit the particularities of your nation-state (or other polity), do reach out!
From CAHN’s description:
Over the last seven years the Canadian Anti-Hate Network has seen anti-hate activists of all kinds come together in so many different ways to stand in the gap between the far-right and the targets of their hate and violence. We are so proud to be in this fight with you.
Our goal is to defeat the far-right through a broad, strong, and autonomous movement. This movement is not hierarchical, and we aren’t its leaders. CAHN provides high quality information to inspire independent action against far-right, hate promoting movements. What happens in your area is up to you.
40 Ways to Fight the Far-Right: Tactics for Community Activists in Canada is based on 40 Ways to Fight Fascists: Street-Legal Tactics for Community Activists, published in 2020 by American academic, author, and activist Spencer Sunshine and PopMob. 40 Ways to Fight the Far-Right: Tactics for Community Activists in Canada was created with the support of and in collaboration with Spencer Sunshine.
This is a revised and edited version of the guide we released last year. Everything we publish is scrutinized by a variety of organizations and individuals who oppose our work. We followed our lawyer’s advice to make this guide tighter and resilient to those efforts. We hope you find it useful.
How to read this guide
The guide contains information about a wide range of tactics you can take to fight the far-right, as well as a brief overview of the current landscape of the far-right in Canada, and a list of resources to learn more.
40 Ways to Fight the Far-Right: Tactics for Community Activists in Canada seeks to help contain far-right organizing by preventing and mitigating the damage it inflicts on our communities. This guide offers ideas for people of all backgrounds, identities, and skill levels. While we encourage people to show up in person, there are also many options for people who aren’t able to do that.
Together, these actions present a variety of tactics which raise the cost of participation in far-right movements and, we believe, will keep communities safer.
We invite you to think about 40 Ways to Fight the Far-Right: Tactics for Community Activists in Canada, like the Guide for Pride Defenders before it, as less of a “rule book” and more like a “family cookbook.” We’re not an authority handing down a policies and procedures manual. We’re a small group of people who have collected lessons learned and strategies developed by antifascists and other social justice activists, with the hope that you’ll take them, try them, and build from them.
In addition to the guide, which we have produced in an illustrated PDF, we have also created a high-contrast easy read/print PDF, and a screen-reader compatible PDF. Additionally, there is a poster, a flyer, and a two page handout version that can be printed and distributed.
